The modern process of high education in Mostar started in 1950 with the opening of the Pedagogical Acdemy, followed by Postsecondary Technical School of Mechanical Engineering and Agricultural. Department of Law and Economics of the University of Sarajevo was formed in 1970 and in 1976 they became independent faculties.

Taking into account decades of long history, the "Džemal Bijedić" University of Mostar can be significantly recognized by a number of important dates briefly listed below.

6 November

A Postsecondary Pedagogical College founded

1959

11 November

Postsecondary Technical School of Mechanical Engineering (VTŠMS) founded

1961

10 March

Student Dormitory in Mostar was founded, and in 1970 it became a part of the University

1970

22 July

Merging of VTŠMS with the Mechanical Engineering Faculty in Sarajevo

Pedagogical Academy started working.

A Branch Department of Law Faculty of Sarajevo was formed in Mostar

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was established in Mostar.

The Coordination Board of the Executive Board of the Assembly of SR B&H issued an approval on preconditions for the establishing of a University

11 Februar

The first constituent assembly of the Dzemal Bijedic University. The first rector of the University was elected, Bela Ler, a full professor at the Faculty of Economy in Mostar

14 February

The Opening Ceremony and announcement of establishing of the Dzemal Bijedic University was organized in the National Theatre building in Mostar

9 December

The University Library was founded.

16 December

The Cultural Club of Dzemal Bijedic University was created

1 September

The Faculty of Civil Engineering in Mostar was established

The University Library became a Depositary Library of the UN “Dag Hamaršeld“.

The Library became a Depositary Library for education, science and culture

The University Library building with its entire library collection was burned down completely

By the decision of the War Government, Dzemal Bijedic University continued at temporary localities: The Social Security building, National Theathre building andMemorial house of Dzemal Bijedic

The University Council made a decision to establish a two-year study program on Inofmration Technologies at the University
